Section 6

Considerations – Subgroups

6.1 People in the correctional system

ADHD rates are higher in custodial settings than in the general population, estimated to be five times higher among youth prisoners and ten times higher among adult prisoners.

6.2 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

Currently, there is a lack of research on understanding, identifying, assessing and treating ADHD in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples which may result in over-diagnosis or under-diagnosis.

6.3 ADHD in people with co-occurring substance use disorders

ADHD is a risk factor for the development of substance use disorders, and people presenting with substance use disorders have an increased risk of having ADHD.
